Foreign English teachers are not really expected to know or use any Thai in the classroom. But, I always think it is an interesting exercise for you to learn some of the more common words you might hear in Thai.

When the teacher enters the classroom, the students go through a routine. This is the version that is used in the English lesson:

Class Captain: Please stand up
Students: Good morning
Teacher: Good morning. How are you?
Students: I am fine thank you. And you?
Teacher: I am fine thank you. Please sit down.
Students: Thank you.

The following are some useful phrases for the classroom.

Are you ready? – นักเรียนพร้อมหรือยัง
Yes, we are - พร้อมแล้วค่ะ/ครับ
Please sit down - โปรดนั่งลง
.. sit on your chair - โปรดนั่งลงบนเก้าอี้
.. sit on the floor - โปรดนั่งลงบนพื้น
Please stand up  - โปรดยืนขึ้น
Come here please - โปรดมาที่นี่
Go and sit down - ไปได้และนั่งลง
Repeat after me - พูดตามครู
Everyone - ทุกคน
Listen! - ฟัง
Quiet please - โปรดเงียบ
Stop! - หยุด
Clap your hands - ปรบมือ
Very good - ดีมาก
How do you spell….? - สะกดอย่างไร
What is this? - นี้คืออะไร
What colour? - สีอะไร
How many? - มากเท่าไร
Let’s sing a song – มาร้องเพลงกัน
Show your hands - ชูมือขึ้น
One more time - อีกครั้งหนึ่ง
Last time - ครั้งที่
